Popularly known as Little Tibet, Spiti is nestled in the
Himalayan Mountain range in Himachal Pradesh. Accessible only during
summer.
Literally meaning the “the middle land”, Spiti is surrounded
by Tibet in the East, Ladakh in the North, Kullu and Lahaul in the South and
Kinnaur in the South East. It is one of the remotest sites of the country and
usually remain cut-off from most of the tourist maps.Perched at a height of 12,500 meters above the sea level, Spiti is located on the banks of the Spiti River and reverberates with pristine culture and paradisiacal natural beauty.
The place is usually accessed by trekkers and bikers as its surreal landscapes, glaciers and relatively untouched environment is too much of a temptation. Even villages adorning this incredible valley appear like some Grand Painter’s fantasy.
Some other attractions such as the Tabo monastery, which is one of the oldest Buddhism centers in Western Himalayas can be a great charm. It is a home to some fabulous Ajanta like paintings and Buddhists Lamas can be seen singing, dancing and playing musical instruments while chanting their mantras.
With the arrival of winters, Spiti gets covered in thick
snow and gets virtually cut off from the rest of the world. It is a great place
to witness the true wonders of nature being discovered in front of your very
eyes.
