Mandi is a beautiful city in the district of Mandi in the state of Himachal Pradesh. There are more than 81 temples in the city, and it is because of this Mandi is often referred to as ' Varanasi of the East' . Situated along the banks of the Beas River.
Mandi was at the forefront of various revolutionary activities during the freedom struggle. The city of Mandi was founded in 1526 by Ajber Sen and Maharaja Ranjit Singh occupied it in 1839. However, soon after his death, Sikh power in Mandi disintegrated. Mandi became a part of India on April 15, 1948.
Packed with a thick green cover of pine trees, deodar trees and tea plantation, this geographical area is also ingrained with rich culture and heritage in form of its numerous temples spread all across the town.
Mandi is popular with trekkers. Mandi is one of the few places where Bandy, a sport similar to ice hockey, is played. Various religious sites in and around Mandi have made the region sacred for Hindus, Sikhs and Buddhists alike.
Mandi is the second most populous city in Himachal Pradesh. Mandi was named after the Sage, Manav, who once meditated in the region. Pleasant weather along with breathtakingly beautiful scenery that includes snow-clad mountains, ensure that Mandi is a favourite spot for tourists.
Mandi can be visited throughout the year but the best time is from April to October. These months the weather is pleasant and perfect for holiday makers.
