Prashar Lake is a beautiful lake located in the Mandi
District of Himachal Pradesh at an altitude of 8,956ft and is an abode for
nature lovers and pilgrims alike, and offers its visitors tranquility and
beautiful views of the Dhauladhar, Pir Panjal and Kinnauri mountain ranges.
The lake has been named after the sage Prashar (father of
Vedavyas) who has mediated here and is a pristine spiritual place.
The people of the adjoining area throng this temple during
this annual fare held here in the in the month of June and the village deities
of this vast mountainous area are carried to this heavenly spot to pay
obeisance to sage Prashar.
Alongside the lake there is an old three storied pagoda
shaped temple dedicated to the sage Prashar. The temple and a small ground
alongside the lake offers great scenic natural beauty and provides the feel of
heaven. This temple was built by Raja Ban Sen of Mandi in the 14th
century and is capped with a roof of slate tiles and has a wealth of wood
carvings.
Its lush green valleys, interspersed with rivers and lakes
offer one of the most scenic and enjoyable trekking experiences.
It is nestled with tall cedar trees and forms a perfect
location for a calming vacation, away from the hustle-bustle of the city. It is
also known as the bird's eye as when seen from above it resembles the same.
How to Reach
By Air: Bhuntar is the nearest Airport
for this trek.
By Rail: Chandigarh serves as the nearest
railhead to Prashar Lake. From Chandigarh, the bus journey takes around 6-7
hours till Mandi. From there onwards hire a jeep to Baggi Village. The road is
quite smooth till Manali except for the patch between Chandigarh and Bilaspur.
By Road: If you are planning to travel by
road, hitch a ride in a bus that is plying for Kullu and Manali, it goes via
Mandi. The distance from Delhi to Mandi is 430 km, which is covered in about
10-12 hours. From there onwards hire a jeep to Baggi Village. A motorable road
connects Baggi. However, one can take a bus to the nearest village called
Baggi, beyond which there are no buses. The hike from Baggi village to the lake
is approximately 7 km.
