Keylong, popularly known as the ‘Land of Monasteries’, is a
beautiful tourist destination of Himachal Pradesh, located at an elevation of
3350 m above sea level. Serving as the headquarters of the Lahaul and Spiti
districts, Keylong has several tourist attractions.
Nestled on the Manali-Leh Highway, Keylong is a little
hamlet, in the Lahaul and Spiti district in the Indian state of Himachal
Pradesh, which has witnessed a major economic growth since it became an
overnight halt point for buses traveling between Himachal Pradesh and
Ladakh.
Keylong offers visitors with the opportunity to visit
several Buddhist pilgrimage centres, which are famous for their unique
architectural deigns and have historic relevance.
Renowned author Rudyard Kipling described the place as “it
is surely the God live here; this is not the place for men.” Lahaul and Spiti
have hardly changed with the time. People still live the way they used to live
and strongly believe in conserving nature.
Keylong follows Buddhism culture and every festive
celebration includes participation of Lamas and monks. The annual festival
Lahaul festival celebrated in July is quite famous among Buddhist and locals.
Several cultural activities are organised during the festival and it attracts
tourists as well.
Mid May to mid October is the best time to visit Keylong as
Rohtang Pass is closed rest of the year due to snow fall.
