Yumthang Valley is a beautiful valley situated in north Sikkim. It sits at an elevation of 3,500 metres above sea-level, so naturally home to many beautiful Himalayan flowers. 
There is no direct way of going to Yumthang Valley - one has to first go to the capital, Gangtok, and get permission to go to the Valley. Yes, everybody needs permission to go to the Valley because of its proximity with the Indo-China border.
As the China border is nearby, the whole area is under army control. Visitors require protected area permits (PAP) to visit Lachung/ Yumthang/ Zero Point. It can be made at Gangtok Tourism Office, District Administrative Center at Mangan, or at Chungthang Sub-Divisional Magistrate's Office. However it's best to leave it to the tour operator. 
It has a unique self-governing body called the Dzumsa, which substitutes the modern Gram Panchyat.
Yumthang Valley is extremely picturesque, with green slopes covered with trees, yaks grazing in the flower-spangled grassy plains below, and a river flowing right through the valley.
 Dr. Joseph Hooker in his 'Himalayan Journal' of 1855 mentioned that Lachung and Yumthang are the two most picturesque places in the whole of Sikkim and had even compared them to valleys of Switzerland.
Yumthang Valley is an amazing treat where you would become the element of the ceaseless picture exclusive of any sort of infringement. Yumthang Valley is world famous for its rich variety of flowers and rare fauna and is known as the Valley of Flowers, considered as a mecca for nature lovers and botanists from all over the world.
The serene and tranquil air of the Valley cannot be described in words. A single visit there can leave the visitor in an enchanted state for weeks.
How To Reach
By Air
The nearest airport is Bagdogra Airport in West Bengal. From there you need to arrive in Gangtok which is 126 km via NH31 and NH31A. From Gangtok you need to proceed further to Lachung (103 km) from where Yumthang Valley is only 26 km.
By Rail
The  New Jalpaiguri in West Bengal is the nearest railway station to Yumthang Valley. From New Jalpaiguri, you first need to arrive in Gangtok which is 119 km away via NH31 and then travel further to Lachung which is only 103 km from Gangtok. From Lachung, Yumthang Valley is located at a distance of 26 km.
By Road
Lachung is the nearest township to Yumthang Valley. It is only at a distance of 26 km from here. Local taxis run between Gangtok- Lachung- Yumthang.

By Rail: The nearest Railway Station is Darjeeling Railway Station which is connected to the major cities of Sikkim and is 171 Km from the town.
By Road: The road connectivity of Lachen is very good and provides connection to all major cities of Sikkim

Described as the most picturesque hill station of Sikkim, Lachung is perched at an elevation of nearly 9,600 feet in northeast Sikkim. Snowplowed mountains, meandering streams, apple orchards, breathtaking waterfalls and delicious cuisine lend a touristy look to Lachung. 
The word Lachung means “small pass”. Embraced by spectacular waterfalls, snow covered mountain peaks, cascading streams and apple orchards, Lachung will honestly soothe your eye. 
The people who reside in Lachung are mostly of Lepcha community and Bhutia – the Tibetan descent. They are known as the Lachungpas. The popularly spoken languages here are Nepali, Lepcha and Bhutia. The people of the town follow their unique administrative system called Dzumsa even to this day under which all the local disputes are settled.
This is also a place where the two rivers Lachen and Lachung - the tributaries of River Teesta meet.
The famous attractions of Lachung are the Lachung Monastery and the Rhododendron Sanctuary – a sanctuary with many varieties of the state flower rhododendron that’s in full bloom during the early summers.
British writer and explorer Joseph Dalton has described Lachung in the book ‘The Himalayan Journal’ as the “most picturesque village of Sikkim”
The place is renowned for its peaches, apples and apricots. Earlier, it served as a trading post between Tibet and Sikkim.
Lachung serves as the perfect base for tourists heading towards Yamthang valley.The serene and spiritual ambience of the place allures travelers from all parts of the globe.
How to Reach
By Air
Located at a distance of 125km from Gangtok, Bagdogra airport is the nearest airport to Lachung. Regular flights operate from Delhi, Kolkata and Mumbai to Bagdogra. Further you can hire a cab or take a bus to travel to Lachung.
By Train
The nearest train station to Lachung is New Jalpaiguri train station, around 120km away from Gangtok. Further take a bus or hire a taxi to travel to Lachung, around 103km away.
By Road
There are number buses, taxis and jeeps available to travel to Lachung from different destinations of the state. Gangtok (103km), Darjeeling (169km), Bagdogra (194km), Jalpaiguri (231km) and Mangan (51km) are directly connected to the town via scheduled buses.

The Buddha Park hosts a beautiful statue of Sakyamuni Buddha which is clearly visible from all the directions of southwest Sikkim near Ravangla and some parts of west Sikkim. The park area is beautifully landscaped creating ample walkway, gardens and space for visitors to enjoy the serene surroundings. The site commands beautiful views of the mountains and the spiritual ambience of the location adds to the visitor experience. The site also has additional infrastructure created for a museum meditation centre and for Buddhist conclave.
Sikkim has an ancient connection with Buddhism. The mountain state is dotted with various monasteries and relics of the faith. On the birth anniversary of Lord Gautama Buddha in 2006, the Sikkim state government took decision to celebrate the birth anniversary throughout the year in Sikkim. And as a part of the festivity, Ravangla was chosen to construct and install a large statue of Lord Buddha and eco-garden to memorialize the event. The Buddha Park Ravangla Sikkim is an important landmark in Sikkim’s unique effort to promote pilgrimage tourism.

This place was constructed in 2006-13 and features a 128-foot high statue of the Buddha as its centerpiece. The site was chosen within the larger religious complex of the Rabong Gompa (Monastery), itself a centuries-old place of pilgrimage. Also nearby is Ralang Monastery, a key monastery in Tibetan Buddhism.
His Holiness the Dalai Lama consecrated the colossal 128 foot hammered copper statue of the Buddha, which he had earlier named Tathagata Tsal, at Ravangla. The statue of the Buddha marks the occasion of the 2550th birth anniversary of Gautama Buddha.

Ravangla is a relatively new tourist spot in South Sikkim. It is a small picturesque town on the highway from Gangtok to Gyalshing at an elevation of 8,000 ft. Ravangla is one of the few places in Sikkim which offer undisturbed views of the Greater Himalayas (Mt. Kanchenjunga, Mt. Pandim, Mt. Sinialchu, Mt. Kabru).
In April and May lots of flowers are in full blossom. The weather in Ravangla is very volatile, so always be prepared for rains.
How to Reach
Ravangla is situated about 65 km west of Gangtok and 52 Km east of Pelling. It is directly accessible from Gangtok (2 hrs 15 mins), Siliguri (126 km - 4 hrs 30 mins), Darjeeling and Kalimpong. If you want to reach Ravangla by evening, make sure you book or hire a taxi by afternoon. Beyond afternoon, one can reach Ravangla by traveling to Namchi and from there another taxi to Ravangla.
By jeep or taxi
Jeeps arrive at and leave from the crossing at the southern end of the market . A few taxis go directly to Pelling, but normally you will have to change cars at Gyalshing.
By bus
Buses to Gangtok leave at 9am, to Gyalshing at 11am. There are two buses to Namchi at 9am and 1pm. If you want to go to Darjeeling, you will have to take a bus or taxi to Jorethang first and change cars there.

Ban Jhakri Falls is about 10-12 kilometers from Gangtok on the way to Ranka. Ban Jhakri Falls is a new sightseeing destination for tourists, its compound spreads on 2 two acres of land. 
The main attraction of the park is the waterfalls which cascades from a rocky height of almost 40 feet and plunges down with intense force. Around the waterfalls gardens have been beautifully landscaped and the place is further adorned with several statues of Ban Jhakri, Lyam Lymay, Mangpas and Lepcha ancestors. Other recreational activities and refreshment stalls are also placed at the entrance of the park. Entrance fee is levied for all visitors.
A Ban Jhakri is a mythical man, who exists only in folktales within the Nepali Community in Sikkim. Local people believe that Ban Jhakri dwells in the forest and live in rock caves worshiping sprits. The ethnic communities of Sikkim still believe in such mysteries as it is part of their tradition and culture.
Banjhakri falls is your typical touristy spot in Sikkim. It is an energy park and a shamanistic theme park. The falls is set amidst dense greenery and the theme park itself is littered with ethnic sculptures and figurines of the Jhakri culture.
 The waterfall that roars down from a height of say 70 feet. Enough facilities have been provided for the tourists to go closer to the waterfall and in fact take a natural shower.
Sikkimese style bridges have been built over the water streams and that lead to small view points from where one can get great shots of the waterfall. Apart from being view points, these spots are also designed in shamanistic style and one can see great artwork on their ceilings. 
HOW TO REACH
Located 10 km away from Gangtok on the way to Ranka Village and takes approximately 30 min to drive. Local taxi is available from the market place and hotel.

Nathula Pass is a mountain pass in Eastern Sikkim, on the Indo-Chinese border that serves as the trade link between India and China. Nathula Pass nestles at an elevation of 14,140 feet and ranks amongst the highest passes accessible by tourists via motorable road.
The Old Silk Route through Lhasa, Sikkim and Eastern India used to cross through Nathula Pass. The other side of Nathula Pass is Chumbi Valley of Tibet. This mountainous pass is one of the oldest trading border posts connecting Tibet and India.
The Nathula Pass is marked by Entrance gates of both countries (India and China) and military bunkers on both sides of the gates. On the Indian side, you would find some fortified military bunkers, a war memorial, an army exhibition centre, a military canteen serving hot tea and fresh snacks to tourists.
On the way to Nathula, you will come across a place called Thegu which has an ATM. This is the highest altitude ATM in the world. It operates with a generator and a special fuel that does not freeze in such high altitude.
Nathula Pass permit procedure is issued by Sikkim Tourism Department in Gangtok. You can either get your permit through a registered tour agency or ask your hotel to get it. You will need to submit documents like a photo ID proof and two passport size photographs and you will get your permit by the next morning.
Nathula Pass is only open for Indian visitors for 5 days a week including Wednesdays, Thursdays, Fridays, Saturdays, Sundays and closed on Monday & Tuesday for two days.
How To Reach
You will get shared jeeps and reserved vehicles like Scorpio, Innova, Bolero and Sumo to Nathula from Gangtok. It usually is a full one day trip including visits to Tsomgo Lake and Baba Mandir along with Nathula. Nathula is around 56 km from Gangtok, which is roughly a one and a half hour drive but due to road conditions, snow, and landslides, traffic can get held up for hours.

The cost varies depending on the season. During peak season (April to June and October to November) shared vehicle would cost about Rs. 700 per person for a visit to all three (Tsomgo Lake, Baba Mandir and Nathula) including permit fee while a reserved vehicle like Scorpio or Innova would cost around Rs. 7,000 including permits. During low season, the reserved vehicle would cost around Rs. 5,500 and shared vehicles are usually not available.

Tsomgo Lake, also known as Changu Lake is a glacial lake in Sikkim and located at an altitude of 12,310 feet. The name Tsomgo means 'Source of water'. It's located 35kms from Gangtok town and on the steep route known as Jawaharlal Nehru Road which leads all the way to Nathula Pass.  
 It takes about 2 hours by car from Gangtok to reach the lake. The lake is filled with water of melting snow coming from the surrounding mountains. It's a one kilometer long oval shaped lake. The average depth is about 50-feet.
 You should spend some time here and soak in the serene beauty of the lake and its surroundings. In the earlier days the lamas used to study the color of water in the lake and forecast the future. A darker color would indicate that the coming year in the state may be troublesome.
 This is one of the few and awesome high altitude lakes in India. The lake becomes doubly attractive with the reflections of the surrounding hills on the water.
 You should reach Tsomgo lake before noon because in the afternoon the weather here usually turns inclement. In fact best is to start from Gangtok by 7:30 to 8am and reach here by 10am so that you get clear 2 hours to enjoy. In the winter however the route sometimes get closed due to heavy snowing. Photography is now permitted and foreigners are also allowed to visit the lake.
 However since this is a restricted area, you are required to take a permit (you need photo identity proof and two passport size photos). You can get the permit from the Sikkim Tourist Information Center at MG Marg Gangtok, or ask the hotel or a travel agent to arrange for it.
Tsomgo lake is open for both Indian and foreign nationals, however foreign visitors have to be in a group of two or more and have to apply for a visitors permit through a registered travel agency.

By Air
The airport nearest to Gangtok is about 124 kilometres away in Bagdogra, West Bengal. From the airport, you can hire a shared taxi or a private vehicle that will get you to Gangtok in a matter of two hours. The drive from Bagdogra to Gangtok is absolutely stunning with gorgeous mountains and River Teesta as your backdrop. 
By Train
The nearest railway station to Gangtok is about 148 kilometres away in New Jalpaiguri in Siliguri. The station is well-connected to major cities like Kolkata and New Delhi. From New Jalpaiguri you can take a taxi to Gangtok or go to Siliguri Bus Station and catch a state-run bus to Gangtok, which will take you about 5-6 hours.
By Road
Tourists rolling in from nearby places like Siliguri, Darjeeling, Kalimpong and Kolkata prefer to drive to Gangtok. The roads are well-maintained, except in a few places.
