Yumthang - Sikkim - India

Yumthang Valley is a beautiful valley situated in north Sikkim. It sits at an elevation of 3,500 metres above sea-level, so naturally home to many beautiful Himalayan flowers. 
There is no direct way of going to Yumthang Valley - one has to first go to the capital, Gangtok, and get permission to go to the Valley. Yes, everybody needs permission to go to the Valley because of its proximity with the Indo-China border.
As the China border is nearby, the whole area is under army control. Visitors require protected area permits (PAP) to visit Lachung/ Yumthang/ Zero Point. It can be made at Gangtok Tourism Office, District Administrative Center at Mangan, or at Chungthang Sub-Divisional Magistrate's Office. However it's best to leave it to the tour operator. 
It has a unique self-governing body called the Dzumsa, which substitutes the modern Gram Panchyat.
Yumthang Valley is extremely picturesque, with green slopes covered with trees, yaks grazing in the flower-spangled grassy plains below, and a river flowing right through the valley.
 Dr. Joseph Hooker in his 'Himalayan Journal' of 1855 mentioned that Lachung and Yumthang are the two most picturesque places in the whole of Sikkim and had even compared them to valleys of Switzerland.
Yumthang Valley is an amazing treat where you would become the element of the ceaseless picture exclusive of any sort of infringement. Yumthang Valley is world famous for its rich variety of flowers and rare fauna and is known as the Valley of Flowers, considered as a mecca for nature lovers and botanists from all over the world.
The serene and tranquil air of the Valley cannot be described in words. A single visit there can leave the visitor in an enchanted state for weeks.
How To Reach
By Air
The nearest airport is Bagdogra Airport in West Bengal. From there you need to arrive in Gangtok which is 126 km via NH31 and NH31A. From Gangtok you need to proceed further to Lachung (103 km) from where Yumthang Valley is only 26 km.
By Rail
The  New Jalpaiguri in West Bengal is the nearest railway station to Yumthang Valley. From New Jalpaiguri, you first need to arrive in Gangtok which is 119 km away via NH31 and then travel further to Lachung which is only 103 km from Gangtok. From Lachung, Yumthang Valley is located at a distance of 26 km.
By Road
Lachung is the nearest township to Yumthang Valley. It is only at a distance of 26 km from here. Local taxis run between Gangtok- Lachung- Yumthang.
