Lachung - Sikkim - India

Described as the most picturesque hill station of Sikkim, Lachung is perched at an elevation of nearly 9,600 feet in northeast Sikkim. Snowplowed mountains, meandering streams, apple orchards, breathtaking waterfalls and delicious cuisine lend a touristy look to Lachung. 
The word Lachung means “small pass”. Embraced by spectacular waterfalls, snow covered mountain peaks, cascading streams and apple orchards, Lachung will honestly soothe your eye. 
The people who reside in Lachung are mostly of Lepcha community and Bhutia – the Tibetan descent. They are known as the Lachungpas. The popularly spoken languages here are Nepali, Lepcha and Bhutia. The people of the town follow their unique administrative system called Dzumsa even to this day under which all the local disputes are settled.
This is also a place where the two rivers Lachen and Lachung - the tributaries of River Teesta meet.
The famous attractions of Lachung are the Lachung Monastery and the Rhododendron Sanctuary – a sanctuary with many varieties of the state flower rhododendron that’s in full bloom during the early summers.
British writer and explorer Joseph Dalton has described Lachung in the book ‘The Himalayan Journal’ as the “most picturesque village of Sikkim”
The place is renowned for its peaches, apples and apricots. Earlier, it served as a trading post between Tibet and Sikkim.
Lachung serves as the perfect base for tourists heading towards Yamthang valley.The serene and spiritual ambience of the place allures travelers from all parts of the globe.
How to Reach
By Air
Located at a distance of 125km from Gangtok, Bagdogra airport is the nearest airport to Lachung. Regular flights operate from Delhi, Kolkata and Mumbai to Bagdogra. Further you can hire a cab or take a bus to travel to Lachung.
By Train
The nearest train station to Lachung is New Jalpaiguri train station, around 120km away from Gangtok. Further take a bus or hire a taxi to travel to Lachung, around 103km away.
By Road
There are number buses, taxis and jeeps available to travel to Lachung from different destinations of the state. Gangtok (103km), Darjeeling (169km), Bagdogra (194km), Jalpaiguri (231km) and Mangan (51km) are directly connected to the town via scheduled buses.
