Borra Caves are situated on the East Coast of India in the
Anantagiri Hill range of the Araku Valley. Spread across an area of about 2 sq
km, the caves are situated around 1,400 m above sea level. In 1807, the caves
were discovered by William King George of the Geological Survey of India.
Considered to be one of the largest caves in India.
According to locals, once a cowherd lost his cow while
grazing. He soon realized that his cow had fallen down. While searching for the
cow, the cowherd found these caves and came across a Linga inside it. The Linga
is considered synonymous to Lord Shiva, who saved the cow. After this, a small
Shiva temple was built right outside this cave.
The interiors of these caves are installed with sixty three
lamps of mercury, sodium vapour and halogen lamps. The destination also has
several mica mines; hence a project named Thalipudi Reservoir Scheme is
introduced for mining precious stones like rubies.
The caves, being one of the largest in the country, can be
found at an elevated point of 705 m (2,313.0 ft), explicitly exhibiting various
forms, shapes and sizes of speleothems. The caves are made up of karstic
limestone structures in majority that extends to a stretch of 80 m (262.5 ft)
because of which it is considered the deepest cave of India.
Tourists can spot number of bats and golden gecko in these
caves. Mosses and brown-to-green algae are some of the popular floras seen
inside these caves.
Breathtaking hilly terrain, beautiful landscape,
semi-evergreen moist deciduous forests, and wild fauna of the area are a visual
feast. This cave is the biggest in India considering the area it has spread
geographically.
