Somnathpur Temple is a prominent attraction in a small
namesake village, situated about 35 kilometres away from Mysore. This temple is
also known as the Keshava Temple and Chennakesava Temple. Built by Hoysala
rulers during their reign in this region, it stands as a relic of the bygone
era. The temple comprises three shrines, three sanctums, a common navranga and
three intricately carved pinnacles. Visitors can see the idols of Lord
Janardhana and Lord Venugopala in the northern and southern sanctums, respectively.
The shrine boasts of an impressive architecture, with the
temple constructed exquisitely on a star-shaped platform, which gives it a
distinct look. It is surrounded by a walled courtyard that features a porch and
a gate. Both the exteriors and interiors are absolutely stunning that leave
visitors completely mesmerised. The friezes on the temple’s outer walls exhibit
beautifully carved rows of elephants, mythical birds and beasts along with
charging horsemen. These carvings enhance the overall appeal of this
temple.
On the other hand, the interiors showcase exquisitely carved
ceiling, scenes from epics and beautifully carved images of gods and goddesses.
One of the main highlights of this temple is the central wall space. There are
images of deities decorated with heavy jewellery, bangles on every arm,
towering crowns and chunky anklets.
