Sheshnag Lake - Jammu and Kashmir - India

Sheshnag Lake, lying at an elevation of 3,658 m above ground level, is situated 27 km away from Pahalgam. This greenish blue lake is covered with ice until June, after which it is used as an en route destination in Amarnath Yatra.

Sheshnag Lake is one of the famous tourist destination in Kashmir Valley. It is mostly fed by melting of snow and streams coming down from mountain tops.

  Lake drains out through a stream which joins Lidder River at Pahalgam.

 The lake is regarded sacred since ancient times as it lies on the pilgrimage route to the holy Amarnath Caves. Melted snow and mountainous streams feed Sheshnag Lake, which stays frozen and inaccessible during winters.

 The scenic surroundings of this lake consist of sprawling green pastures and snow-laden mountains. It is the natural habitat of brown trout fish, which is found here in large numbers.

 Sheshnag Lake is characterised by shimmering waters and breathtaking environs, which form a delightful ambience for photography. Visitors can click numerous pictures of this beautiful lake, its surrounding greenery and snow-clad peaks.

This lake can be reached from Chandanwari by taking an uphill trek or a pony ride. It is best to visit this lake between June and September, when it is easily accessible and at its scenic best.

How to Reach

By Air

Srinagar airport is the closest domestic airport to Pahalgam which is approximately 95 kilometres away. The Srinagar airport is well-connected to other major cities.Once you reach at the airport, you can hire a taxi or a cab which will take you to the town.

By Train

There are no train stations in Pahalgam. The nearest railhead is Jammu Tawi, which is at a distance of 157 kilometres and is well-linked with most of the Indian cities. Some of the trains that ply regularly from the Jammu railway station are Uttar Sampark Rajdhani, Jammu Rajdhani and Jhelum Express. From here, you would need a vehicle which can drive you to Pahalgam via Srinagar.

By Road

It can be accessed by road up to Chandanwari from which ponies can be hired to cover a trek of 7 km upslope to reach the Sheshnag Lake.
