Hirakud,Odisha,India

Constructed across the Mahanadi River in Orissa is the Hirakud Dam, which is hailed as one of the longest man-made dams in the world.
This marvellous construction was built in the year 1956, and owing to its location has an ideal atmosphere for wildlife to flourish.
The Hirakud Reservoir is also situated in the close vicinity of the dam and is a focal point of interest for tourists and large flocks of birds as well.
A number of migratory birds fly towards this destination during the winter season, and some of the common ones that can be spotted here include Common Pochard, Red-crested Pochard and Great Crested Grebe.
Any nature lover will enjoy the quaint atmosphere and lush greenery that is in abundance at the Hirakud.
How to Reach
By Air
The Nearest airports are Swami Vivekananda International Airport, Raipur (265 K.M) and Biju Pattnaik International Airport, Bhubaneswar (300 K.M). A new airport is being constructed at the industrial township of Jharsuguda (50 K.M) & Nearest Air strip is at Jamadarpali (10 K.M)
By Train
Sambalpur is one of the divisional headquarters of East Cost Railways. There are four Railway Station namely Sambalpur(Khetrajpur, Rambalpur Road(Fatak), Sambalpur City and Hirakud in Sambalpur. There are direct train connections to all the metros and prominent cities across India.
By Road
National Highway 6 connecting Mumbai to Kolkata passes through Sambalpur. Sambalpur is connecting to Bhubaneswar Through National Highway 42.
