Hayagriva Madhava Temple is one of the prominent temples in
Hajo of Assam. The temple was built during the reign of the King Raghudeva
Narayan in 1583. The presiding diety of the temple is Lord Narasimha (another
form of Lord Vishnu).
Hayagriva Madhava Temple belongs to Pala Dynasty. This stone
architecture houses an idol of Hayagriva Madhava. The exterior walls of the
temple has many carvings depicting the mythology. One can see the authentic
Assamese art scultptures in the temple. The Hayagriva Madhava Temple is situated on a hill named Monikut in Hajo. The town of Hajo is at a distance of 30km from Guwahati.
Once at the entrance after a 5-minute brisk walk on an evenly laid out flight of stairs, the views are lovely. And lovely is the architecture all around. From the figures on the entrance wall painted in gold to the rock-cut shapes laid-out in the entire compound to the main temple itself, all of them stood proudly tall.
The temple is also considered as a major pilgrimage spot by
Buddhist Lamas and Bhutiyas who follow Buddhism. They believe that Lord Buddha
acquired Nirvana or Moksha in this place and that the image inside the temple
is that of the Lord.
Just close to this
temple, a smaller temple was constructed by the Ahom King Pramatta Singh, where
Doul (or Holi) is celebrated on a large scale every year.
