Alappuzha is an important tourist destination in
India. The backwaters of Alappuzha are the most popular tourist attraction
in Kerala. A houseboat cruise in these backwaters is a delightful experience.
Alappuzha is also called as Venice of the East. Alappuzha
is also the access point for the annual Nehru trophy boat race, held on
the Punnamada lake, near Alappuzha, on the second Saturday of August every
year.
Alleppey (Alappuzha) is a District of immense
natural beauty in Kerala. Today, Alappuzha has grown in importance as a
Backwater Tourist Centre, attracting several thousands of foreign tourists each
year.
Alleppey, also known as Allappuza is the land of
inland canals, coconut palms and of typical Kerala tradition. It is a
very popular tourist spot of Kerala.
Alleppey is
a unique place on earth. The county is crisscrossed by natural water canals
through which the sea water would come inland.
The canals essentially created a set of islands
which was lush green with paddy fields in the center and coconut trees lined up
on the edges. If some islands are not so populated, it would be covered with
trees and wild bushes.
Alleppey is also famous for its below sea
level farmlands like Kuttanad (‘granary of Kerala’)
The farmers there at Kuttanad prevented the flow of
sea water to farmlands by creating mud bars and lagoon strip. These features
make Alleppey one of the important tourist destinations in India.
Kerala Houseboats in the Alleppey Backwaters are
other major tourists attractions in Kerala. Government of Kerala has classified
tourist houseboats as Platinum, Gold and Silver.
The best thing about Alappuzha and Kerala in
general is the weather. Due to its proximity to the ocean it is more temperate
than central India. The temperature rarely goes above 35 degrees
Celsius and never below 20 degrees. The best time to visit is from September to
March. Monsoon is always heavy. Now a day’s monsoon tourism is also popular
from June to August.
For a total Alappuzha experience traverse the
canals on small vallams (Boats) or anchor in the middle of the backwater lakes
on a Kettuvallam (rice boat converted to cozy house boats) - spend the night
under the star lit sky, listening to the splash of water on to the boat.
