By Road

Ashtamudi lake is the second largest lake in kerala , and is known as “ GATEWAY TO BACKWATERS ” of Kerala. Being smaller than its mighty counterpart Vembanad , one may think it will be small in beauty , but nature proves it as wrong .Vembanad lake is more like a sea , but ashtamudi is just surrounded by palms on both sides  chinese fishing nets, religiously important places on both sides offering you a mind blowing experience for a life time. 
The boat journey is an 8 hour trip, winds through lakes, canals and water bound villages, and gives a complete exposure to the beauty of the backwaters of Ashtamudi Lake.
Ashtamudi - the name is coined from astam = eight and mudi = hair indicating the eight branches of this lake. It is in the shape of an octopus to be precise.

By Air
The nearest airport to reach Cherai is the Nedumbassery international airport in Kochi. The airport of Kochi is well connected with all the prime cities of India including Delhi, Bengaluru, Mumbai, Chennai, Kolkata. The Kochi airport lies at a convenient distance of 22 kms from Cherai. After reaching Kochi one can board a private taxi to reach the center of Cherai.
By Road
Reaching Cherai by road is very convenient as the new Goshree Bridge from the Ernakulam stretches across the backwaters makes of an easy connectivity to the various islands of Vallarpadam, Bolghatty, Vypeen and Mulavukadu. One can also take the road route via Edappally to North Paravur and from there take the road to Cherai. One can board the buses to Cherai from the KSRTC Central Bus Station that lies near the Ernakulam Junction railway station. Several fast and express bus services ply between the Ernakulam to other major cities of Kerala. One can also board a private bus from cities like Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Chennai and Mumbai.
By Ferry and Port
One can also reach Cherai by traversing the water route. Regular boat services are available from the Ernakulum High Court Jetty or the main boat jetty to Vypeen. One also hire a boat service to Cherai from Fort Cochin as there are boats available to reach Vypeen every 15 minutes.
